This is the second post in our theme studio profile series after last month’s look at Organic Themes.
This time the spotlight falls on Authentic Themes who have been building high quality WordPress themes and resources for a good few years now, despite their theme shop only being live for a few months.
As well as cooking up some great looking themes, they also develop plugins and PSDs for WordPress users. These resources are available as either free downloads or to subscribers of their theme packages, depending on the resource in question.
There are some attractive options amongst the resources on offer from Authentic Themes such as the flat social media WordPress widget, the notification bar and the ATT Shortcodes plugin which comes highly recommend and is available to anyone, including those who aren’t customers of Authentic Themes.
Authentic Themes Review
When it comes to their WordPress themes, the Authentic studio uses a set of standard features which can be found in most of their offerings. These ensure that no matter which theme you choose, they will be of a high standard, easy to use, setup and manage. These features include:
- W3C Valid code
- Cross-browser compatibility
- Responsive designs
- Localized and translation options
- Semantic code
- Sample data to help you get started
The entire collection of themes available at the Authentic Themes shop can be viewed here. However, here is our pick of the best themes on offer:
This is their most popular theme on Theme Forest with over 400 purchases. It’s a clean and modern theme, ideal for businesses and portfolios. It’s pretty minimal which makes it perfect for not getting in the way of presenting your work.
Kraken was released in 2012 but has had regular updates since then garnering it positive feedback from those who’ve purchased it. The theme is responsive in design, for compatibility on a range of screen sizes. It is also available in two color options right out of the box. There is also a ‘coming soon’ page included for those who are still working on their final site design.
Leviathan Business & Portfolio Theme
This is a clean and stylish WordPress theme that has been designed to enhance the sites of businesses and freelancers, who wish to showcase their portfolio in the best possible way.
It’s a good effort from Authentic and the large homepage image slider will impress those with strong images to build their site around. The five column icon area fits in nicely with current popular trends in web design. This should help project a modern image for any business using this theme.
The now familiar horizontal row of featured posts from a user specified category is present and correct, and while not the most original choice of element for a home page, it does a good job of encouraging users to venture deeper into the site, thanks to the large featured images. There are also the standard footer widgets for increasing your sidebar options.
While not the most original themes in terms of homepage elements, Leviathan does its job very well and is a solid choice for anyone looking to project a strong landing page and well-designed inner pages using WordPress.
This is the second most popular theme on Theme Forest from the Authentic team and it’s easy to see why. Designed with photographers in mind, this theme is a brilliant way to showcase images and graphics.
The homepage uses a grid layout with no space wasted padding the images. The CSS needs to be changed manually to achieve the look you want in most cases, which might make it a bit beyond the reach of novice users. The design isn’t responsive either, which considering it was released in 2011, shouldn’t come of much of a surprise, but is something to be aware of for those wishing to showcase their work on mobile and small screen devices.
While it would’ve been nice to see a full width option for this theme, it is still a good choice for photographers with high quality images.
Mission Business Theme
Authentic specialise in corporate but interesting business themes and Mission is no exception as the demo can attest.
The neutral colours and sober design will make this WordPress theme attractive to business customers, while the funky image transition effects of the homepage slider will show that it’s not all grey tones and drab mission statements at this organisation.
There is room for a nice slogan area, with a large call to action button on the homepage. The three column area is also ideal for highlighting the core services, and blog content is nicely displayed using featured images and horizontal menus.
Overall this is a really nice, well-designed business theme that I would be happy to use on any future client sites I’m developing.
Pricing and Plans
Authentic Themes have embraced the package options for selling their themes, which mean great value for their customers. At the moment you can purchase 26 themes for $40 which equates to only $1.54 per theme.
There are three subscription options available, including standard, developer and lifetime developer. Each option lasts for one year giving you 12 months of access to theme updates, the knowledge base, and the entire theme collection as it grows. The premium plans give you access to the advanced guides and tutorials as well as the full resource collection.
Any level of subscription allows you to use the themes on client sites with no extra purchase necessary which should be of interest to freelance WordPress site builders.
