Feedburner Is Stealing Your CommentLuv Backlinks!

Feedburner Is Stealing Your CommentLuv Backlinks!Yes… you heard it, right !!

Feedburner is stealing your commentluv backlinks without even letting you know.

For those who don’t know what commentluv is, it is one of the best & popular plugins available for WordPress. It allows any blog owner to reward the people who comment with a direct link back to one of their own blog articles.

If you are using Feedburner as your RSS feed management provider and have never changed their default settings, your CommentLuv links are most likely being stolen by them.

How to check if your links are being stolen?

Hover over to your commentluv link you left somewhere and if it looks somewhat “feedproxy.google.com…” than all your CommenLuv links are being stolen by Feedburner.

How to Fix Feedburner?

Step 1: Login to your Feedburner account and navigate to ‘configure stats’ tab.

Step 2: Now untick the ‘item link clicks’

You’re all done now! You’re set to receive the real backlinks instead of feedburner crappy links !!

This is a good point Devesh, but won’t unchecking that box result in losing statistics on your normal RSS readers? Also, doesnt the FeedBurner URL not have a 301 redirect on it, meaning that it would get attributed to your original article anyway?

    • Hi Dave,

      Glad to see you, here.

Yes, you’re right but than you wouldn’t get any links. Feedburner URL do have a 301 redirect but it doesn’t give you any real backlinks.

Thanks for the comment. Have a great weekend.

Great point Devesh. I had forgotten about this tweak and I just republished an article that I had written about RSS feeds. I just updated the post to point this out and I linked to this article. (It was good timing that I read the WPKube update email this morning linking to this.)

  3. Great spot, Devesh, thanks!

  4. Sneaky sneaky Feedburner. Thanks for the update!

  5. Snaps! I’ve wondered about this problem before because it doesn’t only show up with Commentluv but other backlinks. Anywhere your links are being pulled from a feed is going to have this problem.

It’s nice to have a fix that’s so simple. Thanks.

Great piece of advice. I had no idea Feedburner was co-opting links for devious Google-related purposes rather than assisting me in my quest to climb Famous Blogger Mountain as quickly as possible.

  9. yup,Sneaky sneaky Feedburner. Thanks for the update!

  10. Thanks for the tip. Didn’t even know about this. Went and changed the options for all the blogs I own. Cheers!

  11. Good point. May be due to the reason that CommentLuv gets your last 10 posts from your RSS feed (through feedburner or otherwise). But, I checked my CommentLuv links and found that they are correctly pointing to my site. Incidentally, I am using the default settings of Feedburner. So, it may be that there are different versions of Feedburner, or their default settings might have got changed.
