If you want to make your WordPress site a success, you need three things – traffic, social shares, and quality backlinks. According to recent survey done SearchMetrics, it has been proven that social shares play a huge role in getting your website ranked in search engines.
One of the best ways to increase social shares is, by asking users to tweet or share the post on Facebook. All you have to do is install a WordPress plugin on your site, not the social sharing ones. I am talking about the one that hides the content on your site and ask your site visitors to tweet or share the post on FB, before they can see it.
The idea of using content locker is nothing new. People in blogging & IM industry have already been using it for a long time, to get more social shares and traffic. In this post we are going to share 7 of the best social locker plugins available for WordPress.
While using these plugins, make sure you adopt a conservative approach or you might end up loosing some readers and subscribers.
1. Social Locker ($24)
Social Locker is one of the most popular plugins available for WordPress. The plugin supports Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and Linkedin, and lets you to create a great looking social box, that will help you get more social shares.
One of the best things about this plugin is that it comes Built-in Advanced Analytics that lets you see how effective (or ineffective) it is on your site. It also integrates with Google Analytics, which means you can compare the data with other metrics in your Analytics account.
The plugin is very well designed and doesn’t look obtrusive, if you want to generate more social shares using bonus or incentive, then this is a fantastic solution.
- Optimized for smartphones and small screen devices.

Ninja Popups is a premium list building (designed to attract more email subscribers) and social media plugin, that serves many purpose at the price of one. The plugin is available on CodeCanyon for $20 / single license.
Note: I recently switched away in favor of OptinMonster, since I only needed the email marketing functionality, I miss some of the features from Ninja Popups, but it is far more powerful.
- Ninja Popups – The Best Popup & Social Media Plugin for WordPress
- OptinMonster Review – The Finest List Building Plugin for WordPress
- Exit intent technology.
- Google Analytics integration.
- Support for GetResonse, Mailchimp, iContact, and Constant Contact.

3. Easy Social Locker ($19)
Easy Social locker is another premium WordPress plugin that allows you to automatically lock any content including blog posts, pages, and custom post types. The plugin currently supports four major social platforms – Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and Google+.
The plugin is easy to customize and 5 different predefined locker skins.
4. Viral Lock
Unlike other plugins, Viral Lock doesn’t give user much options to share the content (only supports three social networks). The plugin allows you to hide specified content on the web page until the user tweets or shares your content. It also allows you to add custom “share to unlock” message.
5. Facebook Viral Content Locker ($14)
Facebook content locker is specifically designed for Facebook users. It require users to connect their accounts with Facebook, in order to see the hidden content. This enables you to get access to user emails, which you can use to add it your email list. But a better approach, would have been to simply ask users for their email ids, instead of adding Facebook connect button.
Some of the features include option to autopost your link, shortcode support, export user emails to CSV, and easy to customize.
6. Google +1 Content Locker ($8)
Note: I don’t recommend this plugin, anymore, since it has not been updated in years, and the author has stopped responding to support questions / comments.
The Google +1 Content Locker allows you to wrap your WordPress post and page content in a “content locker” that will require the user to share your content with Google +1 before they can see it. The plugin comes with a powerful tinyMCE toolbar that makes adding Content Lockers to your site a simply point and click operation.
7. Share Locker ($18)
Share Locker is another great content locker plugin which lets you hide the content on a post or a page. The user has to share the post on Facebook or like or tweet to get the content. There aren’t many plugins that comes with an option to share the post on FB, this plugin does that job pretty well.
Note: In last few months, the rating has significantly gown down, and the author has stopped providing support. So make sure to look at the reviews / comments of this plugin, before making a purchase.
Social signals has become an crucial part of the search engine optimization and getting more social shares makes your site look great. I’d personally go with a plugin like Ninja popups, which not only helps in getting more social shares but also helps in building an impeccable list.
