Last week, the guys over at Creative Market announced that all WordPress themes will now be 100% GPL. For last few months, a good debate has been going on allowing full 100% GPL license for WordPress themes on ThemeForest.
Envato did updated their license recently but still it’s not 100% GPL and is not something most of the WordPress folks including WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg likes. So when CreativeMarket decided to make their themes 100% GPL, folks at WordPress were first to support them.
Now WordPress.org homepage has a nice banner of “Creative Market” listed as 100% GPL Premium themes. It’s pretty good for an year old marketplace to get listed on WordPress.
Here’s a screenshot of WordPress.org with the Creative Market banner.

The folks who manages the .com version also decided to support the marketplace by offering for the first time ever a WordPress.com premium theme for self-hosted WordPress blogs.
Further theme is designed and developed by Takashi Irie. The theme would come as little expensive with the price tag of $150. Not everyone going to love this expensive theme but those who do can get it from their listening page.
It shows the public support for a GPL license marketplace, I think it’s the first ever theme marketplace to become 100% GPL! With that being said, it is also the first time a premium WordPress.com theme is made available for self-hosted WordPress blogs.
What do you think about the move? Will going to use the Further WordPress theme of your self-hosted blog? Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
